I agree, the inline VW engine has large dowel pins that precisely locate it with respect to the adapter plate or stock DV bell housing, whichever. Any notion that putting the engine and tranny together and then installing as a unit makes the 2 parts somehow more aligned is highly questionable to me. Maybe the interface between the TIICO plate and the tranny is more open to position variances that account for such an assertion.
