I'm generally not moved to comment with many of the recent exchanges, but this one did incite me to offer a reply while waiting for my iPad to sync.

On the issue of exhaust systems, I had experienced thermal cracking of the DV system repeatedly when used on the 1.8L RV Digifant engine as well as the DV. With the RV engine I went quickly to the stock dual port exhaust flange GTi exhaust with welded bellows coupling (also stock) to the exhaust pipes and never had a problem until I went to the Audi 80 4-cyl. exhaust system. That system provided the best performance and never a reliability problem. Here I used a welded bellows after the 2 into 1 collector and before the muffler. This system remained with the 2.0 l Audi 3A block (best in line 4 gasser engine I ever used) which fit perfectly as a replacement for the 1.8 l RV engine. Block height identical to the Diesel and RV engines. When I turbocharged the Audi 3A, I used the California single port version of the 3A exhaust manifold as it aligned nicely with the turbocharger inlet.

Vibration disappeared with the use of the SAAB hydraulic motor mounts. Never had a reliability problem or a vibration problem with the SAAB units mounted to the original DV carrier.

In my anecdotal experience, I never had a NA diesel engine failure or a failure with the NA or turbocharged versions of the I4 mounted in the Vanagon (all in the original '82 DV position) or their original host conveyance. I have never had a waterboxer 1.9 or 2.1 that didn't fail catastrophically on me (3 examples). For the record, I also have never had a VW (Beetle, Super Beetle, Splittie, Bus and Vanagon) H4 pancake air cooled engine fail for me either (6 examples).

For what its worth!

hi Mark, nice to see your comments. I concur. lol. you won't find me saying much good about them. Fortunately my exposure to them has been limited.

I for sure would never build an inline four, gas or diesel .. with anything other than my own version of the stock DV exhaust system. Have had nothing but full success with those setups.

one of my favorite sayings.. regarding this 91 GL with blown Tiico engine .. 'Glad I don't own it ! "

re what version the 1.8 I just got, it's a 92 .. and Digifant.

re Don's comments .. "slip-shod assembly procedures..mainly bolting it up without having >> things properly straight. "

I have put many adapter systems together. We'll see how this one looks if I take it apart ... but generally .. of the adapter systems I've assembled, name subaru .. there isn't a way to get 'not straight.' .

I did have one syncro vanagon come by with a Tiico .. they were basically satisfied.

I had a phone conversation with a guy one time about inline four gas engines and diesel engine mounts and vibration .. he had worked for a well known supplier of these types of engines ... and now he was having vibration issues with one of their engines .. I said 'I hear a lot of the engines they sell are seconds.' His reply.................I'm not even going to tell you what I know about that at that company ! "

so perhaps many of them are not first grade engines in the first place. If there is one thing I like... it's longevity and durability .. and reliability of course.
