That's why I'm recommending a forged 1/2" ball valve - full diameter inside makes a big difference. And the 1/2" copper stubs are just about 5/8" on the outside to match your heater hose. Avasilable at Rona for about $11.00 my cost.

On a side note, replacing the gate valves in your house with this type of valve will give about 40% more volume at the taps. Replacing the lines with 3/4" copper plus these valves will just about double it. ;) As an added bonus, there is no noise from these valves because there is no turbulence induced.
