hi..sounds like an awesome trip !
and ...re
"the drop of diesel that then leaks out on the injection pump pulley and
timing belt is worse than a couple of extra turns on the starter."
if you are getting diesel fuel onto your timing belt..
or if it is coming from the main shaft ( and I am not a internal injection
pump expert, but I am a vanagon and diesel vanagon expert/whatever, for
sure. ) ..
first...fuel on the belt can be serious, even fatal.
second..
must worse ...if the mainshaft bushing is worn, it can cause timing belt to
track off center..
which can wear through the timing belt if it rubs on something long enough.
in other words..
the Injection Pump being weak can blow up the engine.
also ..
on pre-chamber VW diesels, like AAZ's ..the entire fuel system has to be
perfect. .
I can show you serverely damaged heads from bad injector spray pattern.
there is very little margin for anything to be less than perfect.
things can go a long time with totally failing ..but *the fuel system
itself, and the injectors and injection pump* can do major and serious
damage to the engine , if allowed to operate in a poor condition long
enough.
I should have the pictures of the erroded and blown parts on my webiste.
I really hope people will start to understand that VW pre-chamber diesel
engines are not 'toyota tough' and 'will run forever' and notions like that.
they will run for a good while..
but they are very capable of tearing themselves up also.
so 'be careful' let's say.
fuel on the timing belt ...
that is hyper scary on this type of engine !!!
usually it runs down the block and out the bottom of the lowe t-belt cover
and doesn't seem to get the belt too much.
there is ZERO margine for anything about the timing belt to be less than 100
% perfect.
If it gets off in any way for an instant, your cylinder head is junk
instantly usually.
I hope your situation is nothing as dire as any of this.
and ..what comes out the tailpipe is a deadly poison, so don't let your tow
year old near it.
Iv'e been to Bella Colla from inland ...awesome drive. Tweesmere Park ..
might be some kayaking on a large lake there . Never got to explore that
park, but I have been to Bella Coola where I bought my copy of Bear Attacks
in North America. Great interesting book if you apprecaite that sort of
thing.
Been to Prince Rupert a few times too.
leaking fuel injection pumps are one of the big disadvantages of diesel
engines.
Can't even happen in an electronic fuel injection gas engine like a
waterboxer.
Isn't that funny ..
fuel leaks in vw diesel engines are common ..
and pretty rare in gas vanagon engines , though it can happen, but it's not
an entire injection pump rebuild to fix them either, as it often is in vw
disels.
I hope your trip goes super well.
