This reminds me of my wife and I camping on Manteo Island in N. Carolina many years ago. We were wakened by a commotion on the roof of the van, it was a squirrel, staring down at us through the roof vent, as though he was saying "Get up!". The campground was called "Sandpipers Trace", and it was hands down the most beautiful campground we ever stayed in. Broke our hearts when it was sold to developers...

The sounds of the waking campground were starting to filter into my ears, but dream images still wafted across my closed eyes. I just relaxed and luxuriated with the knowledge that I didn't have to move. Slowly, I became aware of a strange tapping sound coming from above. Tap, tap...tap...tap tap tap. Then the hushed voice of my girlfriend from next to me: "Look up." I opened my eyes. The camper top was up the the vent window open - making, it would seem, a perfect perch. On top of the vent was a large bird, it's nails making the tapping sound on the plastic vent. It took only a moment or two to recognize that it was a hawk. It's feathers making beautiful brown and black patterns, a cruel claw projected from the rear of each leg. It's head twisted this way and that as it searched for it's breakfast with round blue-gray eyes. It stayed for several minutes, then it's attention latched on something and off it flew.

A really nice way to wake up!
