One day recently I noticed my manual transmission whining on acceleration in the lower gears. I don't know how long this has been going on, probably not more than a hundred miles or so. I can almost imagine that it has been going on for years and I just now started noticing it, but I don't think so. I hoped I had just let the lubricant get low somehow, but I changed it and it was fine. There some some metal fuzziness on the magnetic drain plug, but nothing unexpectedly outrageous. There's not much diagnostic data in this report, but I wonder if A) Anyone has any experience with the progression of the whiney noise as it relates to total failure of the system and B) Suggestions about a reliable rebuilder who can perhaps do a positraction or locking differential upgrade or both.
