It can be done either way. Obviously the pre-turbo is going to be reading the actual temp of the exhaust as it comes out of the exhaust ports ..and gives a faster more immediate reading in my experience. Post turbo .. perhaps 5 inches downstream .. like it might read a couple hundred degrees F lower there.. and it's sort of a 'softer' or more spread out reading ..

I saw egt specs for an AAZ engine somewhere once.. official vw specs.. it was so many degrees C measured so many millimeters after the turbo. fwiw.

either way works .. just as long as you know how to make good use of the information you're seeing.
