Many moons ago my brother and I redid some door panels for his old dodge truck. Like the rear hatch panel on the vanagon these were fairly flat surfaces.

We used deviated between using very thin plywood or masonite/peg board. I think we went with the peg board. I do remember we wrapped it in a gray almost salt and pepper carpet from the FLAPS, which we also used to re-carpet the truck.

The installation turned out very nice. When wrapping the carpet around the board we left enough of the carpet in the other side to have contact for 3m adhesive spray to work its thing and also bought some appropriate hardware from the hardware store to make the placement of the panels more appealing.

I have been thinking of placing speakers in that spot and re-thinking the installation. I was going to use the hatch panel for a template like you mentioned.

I hope this helps! Tony
