Thanks, John -- Jim Arnott was kind enough to send me a pdf of 2 01 32 and yeah, it shows a buncha relevant parts. David Beirel pointed me to Bentley page 20.16 which is also very helpful.

I'll take a closer look at the situation today and see if I can sort out what that loose hose was meant to be attached to. Probably the gravity vent valve, as David proposed.

It's amazing to me how many systems and subsystems cars have!
