RE: Narrow vs Wide Tires Ron's point is well taken. The narrower tire, assuming the right tread pattern, will do better in mud and snow. Simple reason: Less resistance when cutting through the mud or snow. This reminds me of an anecdote from the past. An officer in the post WW2 West German Army was asked why all the German Army trucks had high, skinny tires and wheels on them. His response was "So we don't get stuck in the mud the next time we head for Moscow".
