he has no tach, but obviously ...since he has a rebuilt stock 85 waterboxer trans.. it would be the same as if it had a waterboxer engine..

which is .. he has 185 R14C tires .. would put him at the normal 'almost 4,000 rpm at 70.' same as a waterboxer.. tach-ing out pretty high at 65 to 70. Gary doesn't drive that fast though, pretty sure.

I'm real proud btw.. that I had those piston rings in my hands only about two months ago .. and that engine is not fully, fully rebuilt bored out with new pistons etc.. it is very freshened up .. but it's not factory new perfect... So real good job of drivin' 'er right Gary, and taking good care of it. a win-win all around.

actually, I would say we 'saved' what was suppossed to be a 'ready to go, good used engine' when in fact it was a real mess .. and we saved it without the huge cost of a total rebuild. I think we did as good as anyone could for the amount of money that was invested in it.

And real pleased that Gary perservered.., dealt with two small issues .. never got ratttled ... just drove it nice, and dealt with whatever was needed at the time.. a super great all around fellow and great vanagon owner/driver. I think he changed the oil about 6 times on the trip too. Perhaps more than that.

I'd pour Champaign on that engine after it took me that far and got me home too.
