Hydraulic pumps can growl for other reasons besides the pump. A bad rack can also make a pump growl. Any restriction on the inlet will also cause pump noise as the fluid aerates under vacuum. It can also be a bad rebuilt pump! Very common as the core was probably sent in noisy and they did not find out why during the so called rebuild.

is acceptable in a rebuilt power steering pump? I just installed a new pump on OL' Red, my 88GL daily driver, and the pump is nearly as loud as the one I took off the van. The old one was really growling, and the new one is only a bit better - still loud. This is a Beck/Arnley rebuilt and I've had good success with that product line, but this particular one sucks!!

Any ideas on what sound levels are acceptable for rebuilt pumps?

Thanks,

John
