I really wish some of this zinc myth would disappear or at least get the full details out there. While the VW engines are flat tappets so are many modern cars. Neither the Waterboxer or the inline engines use ratio rockers or small lifters with cam shafts that are only surface hardened so the pressure on the oil film is nowhere those encountered on the modified engines with poorly made aftermarket cams that basically started this zinc thread. Adding excessive zinc products to oils that have everything needed only serves to foul O2 sensors and Catalytic converters.

yes, the vw inline four engines, like yours, are all flat tappet engines. And could benefit from oil with hopefully a bit more zinc than other modern oils have.

and you can buy zinc additive by itself too.

I also think there is a slight factor of new oil making a little better pressure than old oil. Like if you drain old oil, fill with the exact same fresh oil.. for a while OP will be a bit better with the fresh oil than it was with the old oil.
