Your description sounds like the regulator cable broke (or more likely one of the plastic guides of it broke.) If you continue to fiddle with the switch, and hear the motor running, you may aggravate the situation by damaging the cable itself.

Get a garbage bag and put it over your door for the short term answer to the rain. To fix the issue, you'll need to remove the regulator.

The first step is remove the door panel. There are a few screws at the rear most of the panel (holding the plastic vents stuff in place.) and then mostly pop snaps..

Disconnect the speaker cables and window switch, so you can put the panel aside while you work on getting the regulator out.

With the window down, you'll want to have an assistant, who can hole the window in the up position while you get at the regulator motor. Consult the Great Green Bible (aka Bentley) on how to remove the regulator motor and regulator. it's not difficult, but is tricky as the openings in the door aren't particularly large.

I've been using the passenger window which was operating flawlessly. But today the glass suddenly dropped into the complete down position. You cannot see any glass except the very top. Operating the passenger side switch I hear the motor running when the switch is up or down but the window does not move. I park my van outside and its the rainy season here so I am in deep sh*t unless I can get this window back up..I've never had the door panel off before so I have no experience with the window mechanism. > > -David (1987 Wolfsburg)
