My '84 came with a really loud fuel pump, the PO mentioned it and said he'd even changed the pump & it was still loud. During the 'get to know it phase' the van ran out of gas at the 3/4 mark on the gauge, I limped back to my house and added 2 gal and it ran great into town, stopping at the gas station showed it should have had more gas. I tried that experiment one more time and it needed gas when 12 gals had been used. I put a new tank in and that fixed both the fuel pump noise and I can use the full tank now. I cut the old tank open ( http://s197.photobucket.com/albums/aa190/becida/84%20Fuel%20tank/ ) but I did not see the problem. I took the cover off the sump but no picture, there was nothing there to see either.

Now when I start to hear the pump I change the plastic filter (before the pump) and the pump is quiet again.
