YIKES! Don't touch that knob. The adjustment knob is attached to a free wheeling nut encased in a plastic slide system. If you unscrew the knob all the way, you will likely need to cut the armrest open to hold the nut steady and thread the knob and rod onto it again.

As Bob pointed out, most floppy adjustable armrests are loose because one or more on the screws that hold the pivot to the seatback frame might have come loose and maybe even fell out.
