I think that I would feel safe starting the morning coffee if the rubber hose was attached securely to the battery and exited through the vent to the outside along with all the seals around the edges of the compartment being in good shape and all the screws holding the top down to make it airtight. Other types of offgassing in the van at night are more of a concern to my better half. LOL

The campers actually have a box inside the battery compartment. The cover
closes all 4 sides and the vent is into the wheel well area.

even with a sealing lid, won't the gasses just vent out to under the seat
and up that way?
It's just not at all sealed.
