I couple phone calls later, I find that my O'Reilly FLAPS has composite or rubber versions. Having gotten used to using the copper crushable ones on my previous '71 bus, I felt wary. Called my local Carquest/NAPA FLAPS and they have the copper ones.

So I'm going to drain out a 1/2 pint or so of oil to bring the oil level down below the halfway point between the upper and lower notches on the dipstick and see how that affects oil temps. Dennis Haynes has done the research on this and found the oil ran cooler; Ian suggested I try it, so I'm-a gonna.
