I have carried gas cans inside the van for short trips across town, but never inside or outside for extended travel. I have been a passenger in a Westy where the owner/driver carried spare (boat) fuel in plastic cans in the luggage rack with no ill effects. You should never fully fill the can. Leave an air space for fuel expansion. If it still scares you too much, you might try a soft (collapsible) boat fuel tank instead of the rigid style. They are commonly used with inflatable boats, and I think they are very expensive compared to the rigid variety.
