Here's a site for RackAttack. They put Yakima racks on my van and Civic. Even if you do it yourself the site shows lots of boat hauling solutions.

I'm 5'6" myself and carry a stepladder when we haul the boats. With rollers on the back and the ladder I can load my 165 sea kayak myself.

Of course, only AFTER I got the van and my car outfitted for hauling boats did my son go to work for Yakima.
