I just put the nozzle of a garden hose into the inlet opening and turn the water on to a relatively slow stream so it won't back up and overflow. The hose stays there just fine, it doesn't fall out.

Perhaps I should mention that I have the later style tank water filler - http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=255070810 (or, in off-white, http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=255070810W ) . If you have the older style inlet with the key inside the lid, you can replace it with this one.
