If your 'died' was sudden and abrupt...I think "wires or switches or connections"...something electrical...

Welding with the ECU in the vehicle IS not advisable. I have been told by mechanics I trust that it does sometimes destroy the ECU or cause it to go wonky (a technical term) That being said, I have had extensive welding done on the exhaust system of my van and forgotten to remove the ECU without dire consequences...The engine and the exhaust system ARE isolated from the chassis by rubber mounts, in my case. Fuel pump and fuel pump relay could also be your cause. Perhaps your coil is going, too. Ignition switch is worth looking at. At least it didn't start puking coolant and oil all over or pop a gasket.. Keep us posted, when you find the cause.

Don Hanson It has been extra hot around here (Oregon/Washington border area)
