try listening it to while it's running with a hardwood 'listening stick' ..or long screwdriver. Put one end on the alternator, the other against your ear. You'll be surprised how much racket there is going on. It may or may not mean something. I have seen perfectly smooth turning alternators that sound like a bucket of bolts.

on the forward bearing housing test .. with belt off, try to lift the forward end of the whole turning assembly in the housing. I had one recently where it was distinctly very loose in the front housing. a normal rebuild in a good electrical shop fixed it perfectly.
