the stock DV set up is a bit lame. not just for adjusting .. I seldom mess with them anymore .. but I remember the alt belt not holding a tension adjustment that well.

in my single belt set ups .. there is no problem at all of any kind about alternator drive. I have built at least 20 , or even 30 of those setup starting in about 1992 .. never ever any problem of any kind.

but there are problems with stock set up sometimes. As you are evidently experiencing.

I keep saying this ... the trick is to find the right w. pump pulley with the right diameter and offset. there isn't the right pulley for the 'large hub' 82 DV water pump .. ( waterboxer PS pump pulley may come close though ....try it sometime, for the large hub water pump - the diameter is about right, the bolt pattern is right I think....just the offset is the issue , and it 'could' work... I'll check that out sometime myself when I have time. ) but there is for the far more common 'small hub' water pump used on all jettas from about 84 on .. super common w. pump. Used in 98 tdi's even I think. one could have a double pulley fabricated out of two ..sure . just no need really.

re I seem to of > toasted my alt belt and the new waterpump belt is loose after 500 miles?"

yes, it's a junk system. and the adjustment is too difficult. Scott www.turbovans.com ----- Original Message ----- From: "ralph meyermann" <ralphmeyermann@GMAIL.COM> To: <vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> Sent: Wednesday, August 24, 2011 7:06 PM Subject: Re: More v belt questions
