Frank,

First and foremost - congrats!

As for the DIN size. From my experience the Vanagon dash is a 1 DIN size. Where you run into problems is the depth - you will find most new units will be listed as a non-fitting unit because of this. However, there is a trangular brakey behind where the radio should go - it was used, I think< to mount the staock radio to. That braket can be cut out and it will provide you a lot more depth space.

I have a Pioneer 4000UB unit in my '85 with no problems. According to specs though - it "doesn't fit" a Vanagon :)

I'm sure others will chime in on this with more details or other experience.
