Many have tried, but the single belt simply doesn't get enough contact with the water belt pulley to turn it reliably, or at the correct speed.

The two pulley system is pretty easy to deal with if you use an single 8mm stud to assist with the shim installation. Additionally, failure of the water pump belt is immediately indicated on your dash because the alternator ceases to spin. Contrast this with the one-belt problem, where the water pump ceases to spin (enough, at least) but the alternator still works fine, providing no indication that anything is amiss until you overheat.
