all right .....now we got something. 89 2.1 waterboxer.. cold it stumbles to a slower and slower idle, then dies.

my thoughts go to electronic air idle control circuit - valve and control unit. That system is supposed to read what the idle rpm is... and adjust accordingly.. it 'should' be able to keep it idling steadily.

simple things you can do .. turn on the key ( don't start it ) and feel the valve on top of the engine to see if it's humming. it should be. means it's at least alive some.

turn key off. unplug wire on side of air valve , start engine again .. if your symptom is the same ...........chances are that system is not working.

with engine off, operate throttle lever on throttle body, listening for a click when you release the throttle back to zero. About 60 % of vanagons like yours have that adjustable switch not making contact anymore.

you could have small and nebulous air leaks in various places. The reading and control of air flow is how the whole system knows what to do .. or at least 'air' and everything about it, is very important - has to be right. No air leaks anywhere .

while it's idling warm, you could listen around with a listening hose, for any hisses . be very careful working on a running engine, no loose clothing, no jewelry, no long hair, etc.

then report back .. we'll see how we can help you. The more information there is to work with, the less difficult it is to be able to help, obviously.
