I have good luck with the KC Daylighter series. They offer two types of light, a driving light with a wide beam and a long range off road light. I am not sure whether these are acceptable to the police everywhere, but I've had no issues. I only use them on remote highways and I have them tied to my highbeam relay so if I do top a hill and unexpectedly encounter an oncoming vehicle, when I dip the high beams, the driving lights go off, too.

I have the euro pattern headlights....those are adequate a huge improvement over even the aftermarket sealed beams that came with the van.... The KCs are not fragile....I've done back to back full days on washboard road and not broken the bulbs, which are replaceable. Mine are big and pretentious looking, sitting on my bumper of an otherwise pretty normal 84 2wd van... I had these on another vehicle...maybe they come in black...dunno.
