Just a quick note on this...
Two or so weeks ago, the night before we left on our family trip into the interior of BC - ( Peter - I carried the escutcheon around many interesting places and never did send it to you - apologies, now that the prep rush is over I can get my act together) - I replaced the front right outer cv joint boot on my syncro. I had mixed feelings as you can understand, finding a torn boot the day before leaving on a trip. I pulled the axle and removed the inner joint and slid the outer boot off that end. Regreased and installed new boot bought locally at dealer. I have to add here that the local dealer has been a good place to get parts for the last few years. Chris who used to work at Bow-Wow before it closed, is now at Speedway (dealer) and can supply parts at good prices.
Anyway, all he had was the Lobro kit with the black rubber boot. My van had (I think original) the translucent pale brown boots on the outer fronts. The outer fronts are exposed to more road hazards and do articulate more, and the rubber compound in the boots is much stiffer. I have read reports that the stock/original? translucent boots are tougher. But these new boots came in a Lobro box with grease, clamps, a little copper circlip (used if removing outer joint), and a new axle nut. I suppose now that my much thought of but never done project of outer joint protectors has to be acted on.
