So I shouldn't have been so quick to post! Lying under my van, looking and thinking more, it seems a new arm with curved 1/2 moon plate should be fine. I'd clamp the cat to it.

FAS attaches the cat to a bracket. They've done more swaps than me so doing this must be ok. All I could see was creating some kind of hot spot by covering any of the cat body. My thinking is that since the cat impedes exhaust flow somewhat, it would need as much air as possible flowing over it to keep it cool.
