There can be a very large difference in how a vehicle stops, depending on the brake pad compound. Simple explaination: Hard pads stop a vehicle better when they are hotter and they last longer. Soft pads stop a vehicle faster, when cold, but don't last so long and eat brake rotors. Hard pads have less friction (braking power) but require more force to get the same amount of stoppage. Soft pads have more friction and work better when cold..less well when really hot..The compound on the pads can be optimized to deliver the performance in certain temperature ranges. If you installed some pads that were meant to last forever....you won't get much stopping power out of them and they might get hot, cause you have to stand on the brakes hard in order to slow down.... A fully loaded camper with an auto tranny...that is near the limit for stock brakes...that is why people change to Big Brakes....a little extra safety margin...
