John, I believe that the key here is that the hemispherical piece
that the spring bears on must be absolutely free on the hexagonal
shaft.  If it doesn't drop off in your hand when you take the spring
off then it will cause problems, and as soon as you have to take up
the nut to where the spring is coil-bound it's sort of like a stuck
brake caliper in reverse.
