Tom, I let a bad water pump (bearings) go up-repaired for too long several years ago. The impeller dug an eighth inch gouge into the case. I replaced the pump but did no repair to the gouge. I don't see any loss of efficiency in the cooling system although you'd think there would be some. I'll call it negligible. Even idling for an extended period doesn't send the heat up sooner than it did before the pump re-machined the case.
