High in the Swiss Alps, a Summit for Vintage Bugs and Buses By PAUL STENQUIST A late summer Alpine invasion of Beetles is forecast for Switzerland this weekend. From Friday to Sunday the bugs, along with scores of Microbuses, will convene at Château d'Oex, located in the Vaud Alps, for the biennial Bulli-Bug Rally.

While most of the assembled Wolfsburg-built iron will be of the air-cooled variety, the event is also open to the T3 Volkswagen van, built from 1982 to 1990, which was water-cooled. According to organizers, Golfs, Passats and the various other water-cooled VW products have apparently been banished.

The Volkswagen bus has long been known as the Bulli in its home market of Germany. The brand appropriated the nickname for a van concept that was unveiled at the Geneva auto show in March.

The event, which is sponsored by the Lemania Coccinelle Club, dates back to 1991 and has been held every other year since 2005. Past meets have brought together more than 1,000 vehicles from more than 15 countries, making this a premier international Volkswagen event.

In addition to the privately owned vehicles making the climb, a number of important Volkswagens from the manufacturer's museum in Wolfsburg will also be shown. Volkswagen's direct participation in the event dates back to the second edition of the rally in 1992.
