Unless I miss my guess, household 220V fittings are not rated for 150 amps. But ... hmmmm .... if I needed a jump, it seems like all I would need to do is connect the discharged engine battery to some other power source, like a spare sedan, and just wait a couple minutes for juice to transfer into my battery. Unless my battery is dead, fried, a battery no more, there's no reason to run the starter directly off that spare sedan, is there?

So maybe that 220V household connector idea ain't a bad idea! AND such parts are cheap.

I could make up a mating cord with battery clips on the other end.

Mind-opening, the ideas that come up here!

That way I don't need to open the lid to access the terminals. If anyone can recommend a good connector, it would be swell to hear about it. > > Sent from my smartphone with tiny screen & even tinier keypad. > > On Sep 12, 2011, at 11:16 PM, Scott Daniel - Turbovans <scottdaniel@TURBOVANS.COM> wrote: > >> starter current draw exceeds 60 amps for sure. >> 150ish perhaps. >> >> For the type of connector or male-femail plug you want.. >> check out welding supply places or sites. >> Acr welding cable is typically battery cable size.. >> and welding stuff is usually made quite well. >> nothing jumped out at me in a quick search ...but look into the welding >> cable world. >> >> Jumping cars and batteries for starting is not a good practice >> anyway............. and I have seen tow trucks with plug-in jumping >> connectors in their front bumper area. >> Scott >> turbovans >> ----- Original Message ----- >> From: "John Rodgers" <inua@CHARTER.NET> >> To: <vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> >> Sent: Monday, September 12, 2011 9:31 PM >> Subject: Re: High quality two pole 60A wiring connectors >> >> >>> Would these be appropriate for a jumper cable hookup? >>> >>> John >>> >>> John Rodgers >>> Clayartist and Moldmaker >>> 88'GL VW Bus Driver >>> Chelsea, AL >>> Http://www.moldhaus.com >>> >>> >>> On 9/11/2011 10:41 PM, greentabe-vanagon@yahoo.com wrote: >>>> >>>> There was a thread the other dayabout wiring connectors, cigarette >>>> lighter plugs, etc. I bought some of these >>>> http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewitem.asp?idproduct=9572 >>>> >>>> (Or search for "hobbyking XT60 connector") a while back and they are >>>> lovely The price is right too - less than a buck for each pair, shipped. >>>> They are made to high tolerances, go together and come apart easily, are >>>> small, impossible to plug in backwards, and if 60A continuous (surge is
