My digital meter reads about 14.4v at the battery with the van running and a pretty low charge on the batteries. I have two 44-group batteries and it usually takes about 30-45mins of running time to bring them back up after the aux. battery is run low.

Sorry, no numbers or complicated explanations here. But those are what I've seen on extended camping trips of 3 months duration on 3 separate occasions. My 'wrong' battery set up usually gives me about 3-4hrs of power for a few inside lights and a sat radio and some computer battery charging. I have replaced my Aux battery one time...actually, I stuck the starter battery over under the drivers seat and put in a new, identical (NAPA) Group 44 battery as my starter battery. That's what happens in my van...and I can't tell you why, or how to tell what may happen in your van...but there you go. I probably have everything all wrong, but it works well enough for my uses.
