Put them inside a nice plastic box with a lid. Or put some plastic screw-on
covers over the studs. Not too difficult to make it butter knife safe.
Not a lot of room for a recessed box on the wall behind the battery.
Your other choice would be to use a special connector like the tow trucks
have for jumper cables. But then you'll need the special jumper cables as
well.

Gracious me! I sure don't want a couple of bare metal posts protruding from
the back of the battery compartment, just waiting for a fallen butter knife
to bridge and ignite the whole darn van!
Something with recessed contacts would be preferable. But many thanks for
