good thinkin' there.

I would expect one to be pretty large..just for safety's sake.
but they are saying the clear one ( obviously a better choice ..as far as
being able to tell how dirty/clogged it might be ) is only 2.75 inches long.
  I'd want it as large as a can size air filter myself.

'bypass' layout  is not a bad idea either.

might get you both ...
just branch with a T ....one branch goes straight though as normal,
the other through the filter ....that way some junk is trapped, but it can't
ever clog up and block coolant flow much.
