Movement of the shift lever in 3rd-4th gears is a sign the main shaft ball bearing is shot or the gear carrier housing is allowing the bearing to move. This is usually OK for a while but overhaul will require machining or replacement of at least the carrier housing.

I have got the headlight relays in, they work great. So this is what we have done recently. New brake master cylinder, clutch booster cylinder, clutch slave cylinder, brake lines bleed and fluid replaced, brake lights cleaned up and working and last of all headlight upgrade. The 1982 diesel NA westy seems to be working great, except one minor problem. When I am in fourth gear and accelerating(if you can call it that) and my hand is resting on the gear shift all is good. When I let off the gas I feel the shifter move about an half of inch forward then when you start accelerating again it moves back to the original position . It may have always done this but its only now that I noticed it (it is now my daily driver). By the way when we did all the above repair work we did change oil and filters (just so you know I am maintaining the vehicle) Any ideas or is the movement normal?
