What size drill and screw did you use?
I used a relatively small drill (5/64"), so couldn't get my smallest #6 drywall screws in.
What i tried with were small wood screws.
Just thought of a new idea: Find a large washer, pre drill it with 8 or more holes in the drill press, then screw the washer to the seal and pry on the washer. That way the prying force is distributed thtough several screws at a time. Will see what I can find in my assorted hardware box (I always pick up any hardware I see on the street... wife doesn't like that) Worst case I have to make the trip to the screw store across town. Long gone is the neighborhood hardware store.

Heh, yeah, that seal can be a real pain. I finally managed to get mine off
using some wood screws with really deep threads to pull it off. The threads
had a large circumference in relation to the body of the screw, is what I
mean by deep.
If you're using small metal screws try using some wood, or even sheetrock
screws. Those should have a bit better bite and be harder to strip.
Otherwise???
