Well. As I expect most of us have been doing, I have been tightening lug nuts on Volkswagens for a bit more than 40 years. I may have used a torque wrench once or twice, but I doubt it. Having had some troubles in the past with lug nuts that were too tight to get off, I pretty much make it my business to be sure that I can unscrew them when I need to. I carry a nice 3/4 inch drive socket "cheater" which has a nice curve to it from fooling with castle nuts. I always put a few drops of motor oil on my nuts (or bolts) before I tighten them and I always tighten them by feel. Which is something just a fair bit short of as tight as I can possibly tighten. I usually stand on my cheater bar to get them loose again. Which...now that you mention it might be right at 123 foot/lbs. But who is counting?
