The turbo engines burn much cleaner if the owner doesn't fool too much with the fuel settings. Driving at elevation the older diesels smoke quite a bit since there is less air for same amount of fuel. The turbo helps keep the air/fuel ratio matched better so far less smoke at elevation.

Yes there are industrial versions of the TDI engines too.
