My first Vanagon was an 84 7 passenger that I purchased when it was about a
year old. The original batter was a group 41.
I went to the ETKA and can’t find the battery listing. However I found the
brackets. 251-915-313-A is listed as Bracket for "vehicles with swivel
seat".
So I guess the different box with screwed on cover is for the swivel seat,
not necessarily to provide a sealed compartment but rather the floor for
when the seat is turned.

That's perhaps true for 86-later Wassers, as they could come with factory
dual battery set-ups. To my knowledge 83.5-85 Westies had no provisions or
factory option for a dual battery setup, but I could be wrong. My battery
box on my GL and my Westy share the same size box and there was no insert on
my Westy to accommodate the 42 batt, just a lot of room. Original owner of
the Westy always went to the dealer for everything based on maintenance
records including battteries during his 12 year ownership in his meticulous
records, which showed a group 42 batt each time. I've used group 41
batteries since 1997 because they are heavier duty from personal experience
- I even use them in Bugs, Buses, my GL, even in my 914.
