Hi.. yes...consider doing the rear wheel bearings while there.

a few things to consider or check... one.......move the end of the stub axle up and down by hand.. ( parking brake off of course ) ideally there is no play there. There will be some. The outer bearing is under a lot of load and just wears. It's amazing how well they last even. 1/16th of an inch up-down play there is really a lot. I see them running with that much play ...but they're very due if there's that much slop there. 1/16th inch is close to .030 inch...a large spark plug gab.. that would be too much up-down play measured at the outer end of the stub axle. .020 inch ..not 'that bad.' I sneak some extra new grease into the outer bearing when the stub axle is out, or even when flange is off.

If anywhere near that .. 'too much' up-down play at the outer end of the stub axle. then you would like to get good german rear wheel bearings and grease seal and install them. It can be a little tricky. It's not 'that hard' to get something out of place pushing things into place, like in a press even. And I have had trouble getting german bearings sometimes. I have read about people doing their rear brgs and it not lasting very long at all, like re-doing it in a couple of months. I am just saying ..........it can be tricky .........so if they are not fairly due ...you might want to leave that alone for now.

The stub axle will come right out without disturbing the bearings. Remove axle, by undoing inner and outer CV's and drive the stub axle out going inward ...like with a big hammer...with a big drift, block of wood etc.

what fun ! scoot www.turbovans.com ----- Original Message ----- From: Jeff Lincoln To: Scott Daniel - Turbovans Cc: vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com Sent: Sunday, September 25, 2011 2:40 PM Subject: Re: Re: Question and parts request.

Heck yes I am going to check the other side! I don't want to go through that again - even if it wasn't as bad as I had omagined something like that would be.

Since I have to replace the stub axle am I going to have to (or should I) redo the bearings while I have that apart?
