I asked the good Volks at Van-cafe what they recommended for their aluminum and steel wheels. Reply: 123 ft-lbs for both types.

Sounds like Operators Manual spec.to me.

If Gary Bawden's plus or minus 20% rule applies - the would be low -98.4 ft-lbs and high - 147.6 ft-lbs and that figure is a whole bunch! I would hate to know my torque wrench was that far off. This is why in the airline shop where I worked, we calibrated the wrench for every torque job. To quote Marissa Tormei in My Cousin Vinny - The aircraft inspectors and the shop foremen wanted those nuts/bolts torque to be "dead-on balls accurate!"- to quote Marissa Tormei in the movie My Cousin Vinny.

Torque specs are torque specs, where ever you find them.
