Martin has a VW diesel engine, which is an inline overhead cam engine. It uses a timing belt but VW wbx engines don't. The wbx engine is a push-rod engine and the cam is adjacent to the crankshaft and driven by a timing gear on the crank. No timing belt or chain, just gears that mesh.
