There is difference between 'tax avoidance' vs. 'tax evasion'. As far as paying for food at a restaurant, it might be in monetary form or another. If you are not compensating someone in some way or another for services rendered, somebody is getting ripped off. Keeping in mind 'love and affection' (L&A) can be considered as compensation. I'm by no means suggesting you sleep with the tow truck operator to get your Vanagon a free lift. A friend buying you lunch or a transporter company 'comp-ing' you a tow can qualify as L&A. Getting a comp tow is like tax avoidance. Lying about the status of the registration of the vehicle to be towed is similar to tax evasion.

One method gets your van home. The other may land you in the back of a police van.;-)

Yes the vehicle needs to be registered before AAA will tow, I'm sure there are many ways around this, just like there are ways around paying taxes, paying for your meal at Denny's etc. I realize I probably have an opinion on this that is in the minority but I feel right and wrong doesn't change with your level of want. >
