Well, I feel like and idiot...turns out when I swapped distributors, I put it back without making sure it engaged the drive gear in the case. Crazy thing is, it must have been sort of turning, because I was getting a spark. That explains the no-start condition, and of course, now it runs perfectly - except for that first minute after startup roughness that's always been there. So much for a definitive answer....but hope this discussion was useful.
