Ed, that is one of the best postings I've seen on Vanagon radiators in the nearly ten years I've been on this list, thanks very much. You're experience, and with a lot more non-anecdotal data, matches what I encountered in my '85 Westy. For several years the 'experts' kept trying to tell me "Leaking head gaskets" when all the symptoms said "The radiator isn't doing it's job". That combined with some stupid behavior on my part finally cost me and engine.

Your observations about the disturbed airflow (and loss of cooling capacity) while driving behind another vehicle is the first I've heard such mentioned. Great information to have, thanks again for posting that, something for all to keep in mind.
