Just want some clarification. When you said "...the nuts on one rim just broke in half..." do you mean the NUT itself? I've found from experience that some people mistakenly call the rear wheel stud and nut assembly as simply the "nut" because they are accustomed to seeing the lugBOLTS in front. My apologies if I am misunderstanding you.

That said, the rears have pressed in studs. To which then the wheel is placed and held with lugnuts. Most failures I've seen have to do with the stud snapping when the nut is tightened too much. I know you did say the bottom half is wedged into the rim which suggest you know exactly what you are talking about. Would you mind indulging me and confirming either way?
